Indian boarding schools were federally mandated and funded schools specifically for native children. At these schools, native language, traditions, culture and appearance were forbidden. Many native children lived at these schools. Over 400 of these schools would operate in the United States, with five being in Michigan. This talk will look at the creation of these schools and their relation to northern Michigan.
